Parallel Computation of Beam-beam Interactions including Longitudinal Motion

چکیده
In beam-beam macroparticle simulations for collider rings, the accurate determination of the incoherent spectrum and potentially unstable coherent modes requires (1) large numbers of collisions, and (2) accurate electric field solutions at each collision. On a single processor, a selfconsistent simulation typically uses a 2D model of the beam-beam interaction in order to achieve a reasonable computation time, however for the long (∼0.3m) bunches in the LHC we wish to include the third dimension in order to account for effects such as longitudinal motion, crossing angle, and the beam size and density variations. We describe here a parallel algorithm, developed with MPI on a small commodity Linux cluster, to extend our simulation code BeamX from 2D to 3D using longitudinal subdivision (slicing) of the bunches. Although this paper concentrates on the computing methods, some performance trials and example results will also be shown.

Coupled Bending-Longitudinal Vibration of Three Layer Sandwich Beam using Exact Dynamic Stiffness Matrix
A Newtonian (vectorial) approach is used to develop the governing differential equations of motion for a three layer sandwich beam in which the uniform distribution of mass and stiffness is dealt with exactly. The model allows for each layer of material to be of unequal thickness and the effects of coupled bending and longitudinal motion are accounted for. This results in an eighth order ordina...

This paper presents the dynamic modeling and design of micro motion compliant parallel mechanism with flexible intermediate links and rigid moving platform. Modeling of mechanism is described with closed kinematic loops and the dynamic equations are derived using Lagrange multipliers and Kane’s methods. Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is considered for modeling the intermediate flexible link. Based...
متن کاملRequest for computation time on parallel machines for the study of beam–beam interactions
The control of Beam-Beam Interactions (BBI) in particle colliders is fundamental to preserve beam stability and to achieve the collider maximal luminosity. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) under construction at CERN has high intensity beams composed of 5616 particle bunches, each containing 10 protons. This represents a considerable computational challenge, requiring the optimization and paralle...
متن کاملInvestigation of Thermoelastic Damping in the Longitudinal Vibration of a Micro Beam
In the design of high Quality factor (Q) micro or nano beam resonators, different dissipation mechanisms may have damaging effects on the quality factor. One of the major dissipation mechanisms is the thermoelastic damping (TED) that needs an accurate consideration for prediction. In this paper, thermoelastic damping of the longitudinal vibration of a homogeneous micro beam with both ends clamp...
متن کاملEffect of the Interparticle Interactions on Adsorption-Induced Frequency Shift of Nano-beam-Based Nanoscale Mass-Sensors: A Theoretical Study
It is well-known that the Interparticle interactions between adsorbates and surface of an adsorbent can affect the surface morphology. One of the consequences of this issue is that the resonant frequency of a nanoscale resonator can be changed due to adsorption. In this study we have chosen a cantilever-based nanoscale mass-sensor with a single nanoparticle at its tip. Using the classical...
